Developer Robert Weiss and his Early Focus on Downtown Somerville

Original article here.

April 9, 2021 – SOMERVILLE, NJ – Robert Weiss set his sights on Somerville over two decades ago, back in 1997 when the Internet was only just picking up.

Back then, the Somerville area was not what it is today. At the time, there were only a handful of restaurants and transit options. Nonetheless, Weiss was drawn in by many quirks and hidden gems, including what he called “the unique main street.” At the time, Weiss welcomed the opportunity to purchase two properties with the hope of delivering upscale buildings in the downtown area.

Fast forward to today, and Weiss Properties has successfully developed two luxury apartment buildings in Somerville.

The Cobalt on Veterans Memorial Drive and The Davenport in downtown Somerville exemplify modern architecture, transforming the overall landscape of the town. The Cobalt is the gold standard for apartment living. All 127 units are fully occupied and benefit from various amenities, including a gym, a pet-friendly environment, outdoor space, and state-of-the-art kitchens, not to mention an ideal location situated near various transport links and access points.

The Davenport is a slightly smaller and more private residence, housing a total of 62 units in the heart of Somerville with enclosed underground parking. It is a place many residents can gladly call home. It also benefits from several amenities, including an on-site gym, Doggy Wash, landscaped courtyard and kitchens Gordon Ramsay would be proud to cook in.

Sunshine, rainbows, and the support of the local community

During both the development of the Davenport and the Cobalt, things weren’t all sunshine and rainbows. It required hard work, tenacity, and the will to succeed. However, as Weiss mentions, the community, in particular, both the governing body and the planning board, were instrumental throughout the development process.

Former Mayor Brian Gallagher and current Mayor Dennis Sullivan as well as state Sen. Kip Bateman, R-16, were immensely supportive and helpful through the planning, approval and the construction process. The political leadership in Somerville has acted as an example of what imaginative thinking can accomplish.

What about the current day?

Currently, despite the recent and ongoing coronavirus pandemic, both buildings are running successfully. In particular, the Cobalt is fully occupied, and the Davenport is on its way there, too. This is especially true now that the weather is changing, the vaccination program(s) are being enrolled, and there’s more traffic passing through the iconic town.

The success of Weiss’ buildings in Somerville are his proudest projects as the president of Weiss Properties. Nonetheless, one thing is for sure: the early focus and success of Downtown Somerville definitely contributed to his wider vision. Just as they did in Somerville, Weiss Properties continues to impact the character of communities all across New Jersey and deliver only the best living experience.
